When asked if mixed martial arts amateur Heath Rud will be a good fighter, UFC veteran Logan Clark simply said “oh, yeah.”

Rud will participate in his third MMA fight on Saturday at Olmsted County Fairgrounds in Rochester as part of “Gladiators,” a nine-fight event being sponsored by Kathy’s Pub.

In his first fight, Rud suffered a decision loss to former Iowa high school wrestling star Blaze Gill. He bounced back with a victory (TKO, second round) in his second amateur fight.

We caught up with the former Byron High School (2009 graduate) wrestling standout this week while he was training with Clark at Rochester MMA.

So what will be different about Heath Rud this time, as opposed to the last time you fought in Rochester?

RUD: I was really nervous in that first fight. I locked up. I felt a lot better in my second fight. It was a smaller venue, and I was just really relaxed. I took him down right away, which I didn’t do in my first fight. I got on top and beat him up in the first round, and I did the same in the second. After watching tape of the first fight, I could have taken him down more. I feel a lot better now.

In your last Rochester fight, Gill caught you with his best shot, a solid left hand, in the final round, and he wasn’t able to knock you out. Even though you lost, did that give you confidence?

RUD: Oh yeah. He rattled me pretty good with that left hook, but I was alright. Once they hit you with something like that, knowing it’s all they’ve got and it doesn’t put you out, it gives you confidence.
