GREEN BAY, Wis. — Rochester’s Travis Wiuff successfully defended his International Fighting Championship world heavyweight championship Friday night.
Wiuff scored a first-round technical knockout over newcomer Justin Newcomb, who entered the fight with a 2-0 record.

Newcomb was another last-minute replacement for Wiuff, who was scheduled to fight Tony Sylvester.

Newcomb came out throwing head kicks, but Wiuff quickly caught one of those kicks and took Newcomb to the mat. From there, Wiuff passed Newcomb’s guard and started landing punches until the referee stopped the fight just 1:01 into the first round.

Wiuff improved to 58-13 as a professional.

Wiuff does not have another fight currently scheduled, though he said he’d like to stay very active in 2010, possibly fighting every month if he’s healthy.

Wiuff, who is an Owatonna High School and Rochester Community and Technical College graduate, has won his last four fights and 13 of his last 15.
