When I hit 30 years old earlier this year, I knew I had to make some changes in how and where I was training.

I realized that I couldn’t do this forever, so I might as well make the most of my time. I spent a couple years training with Team Discipline in North Branch, Minn., under Heath Fonnest, and I learned a great deal from him in the time I spent there.

I took some serious beatings from some world-class strikers, and I noticed my striking started to take off to another level, too. The only problem is I wanted to become a better overall mixed martial artist, and North Branch was predominantly a kickboxing gym.

We had grappling coaches come and go while I was there, but nobody really stuck around. Sure, I made a good run at kickboxing and even fought for a title, but my heart was really in MMA.

In order to become a better MMA fighter, I needed to focus on so much more than just kickboxing. Don’t get me wrong, I love kickboxing and I truly consider myself a striker at heart, but I just wasn’t making the most of my time.

I even made the trek down to Valhalla Combat Sports when I could, and I loved each and every one of those guys there. The only
